Service Technician

 

 Job Description

This position involves the use of manual or power-operated equipment to release plugged sewer services. The Service Technician investigates the cause of drainage problems, unplugs blockages and advises homeowners/occupants of the result of investigation or action taken.  Also included int his line of work is locating secondary utilities with appropriate equipment and completing required forms and reports.  The Service Technician exercises supervision over a labourer who assists in the work as required.

 

Typical Duties

  • Investigates causes of drainage complaint calls by checking service pipes as well as main sewers; determines the source of trouble and decides on action to be taken.
  • Unplugs blockages in service pipes using manual or power-operated rodding equipment.
  • Performs service CCTV work.
  • Performs locating of secondary utilities on private property – past the meter, for power, gas, telephone, sanitary and storm lines.
  • Meets and converses with homeowners/occupants to discuss nature of complaint and result of action taken.
  • Completes all required forms and reports obtaining PO#’s.
  • Provides lead hand supervision to a labourer helper.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Knowledge of drainage maintenance system.
  • Knowledge of work and safety procedures.
  • Some knowledge of plumbing.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to interpret plans/maps.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment from vehicle to site location and to work in awkward positions.

Required Training and Experience

  • Completion of Grade 12 or GED.
  • 1 - 2 years experience in sewer maintenance or construction would be considered an asset.
  • Possession of a valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
